The Franklin Special Response Team (SRT) consists of 15 sworn police officers from the Police Department and four certified EMT IV/Paramedics from the Franklin Fire Department.
The SRT is tasked to perform operations that pose a "higher than normal risk" to the lives of citizens and police officers. These operations include hostage rescue, barricaded suspect resolution, high-risk warrant service, VIP protection, directed patrol operations, and/or any other operation that requires the use of a cohesive law enforcement unit.
Police Officers and Firefighters that want to serve on the SRT must pass a rigorous physical fitness test, achieve a 90% firearms qualification score, and pass a psychological examination that is specifically designed to assess tactical unit operators. Once a candidate is assessed, and deemed qualified, he/she must attend and pass the Franklin SRT basic SWAT School. Here the officers and firefighters are all trained in operational doctrine, advanced marksmanship, breaching and tactical entry, the use of chemical and specialty impact munitions, chemical endurance, close quarter defensive tactics, and tactical rappelling.
After completing basic SWAT training, police officers are assigned a specialty and will receive advanced training in that area. These specialties include entry, chemical/impact munitions specialist, intelligence technician and long-range marksman. Firefighters receive further advanced training in tactical emergency medical support, "across the barricade" medicine, and high-risk triage.
Since being reformed in 1999, the Franklin SRT has resolved numerous barricade situations and executed search and arrest warrants in support of other operational police units. In 2005, the Franklin SRT deployed to Picayune, Mississippi, along with officers from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, Fairview Police Department and Brentwood Police Department to help restore order after Hurricane Katrina. While deployed, this combined strike team performed high-risk patrol, riot control and crowd management operations. For their courage, each strike team member was recognized and awarded by proclamation from the mayor of Franklin and Picayune, Mississippi. Every March 14th, is officially "Williamson County Strike Team Day" in the city of Franklin.
