Franklin, TN – According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to remain in or near triple digits this week as drought-like conditions continue and fire dangers remain a concern. That’s why Franklin Police will be actively on the lookout for, and citing anyone who improperly disposes of a cigarette.

Improperly disposing of a cigarette is illegal regardless of weather conditions, however in light of the current increased risk, police leaders have ordered zero-tolerance enforcement by officers. Violators are subject to a $50 fine, plus court costs. If the careless disposal of a cigarette were to cause a fire resulting in property damage or injury, additional criminal and civil penalties may be applicable.
