Family Safety House
The Franklin Fire Department's Family Safety House has arrived. The purpose of this safety house is to teach children about fire safety and prevention. Educators have consistently taught fire prevention in the classroom, but statistics have shown an increase in fire related injuries and fatalities suggest a need to focus on safety in the home. This fire safety and prevention curriculum has been designed to be used in the schools to focus on the home. As part of the program, firefighters come to the school with the fire safety house, a specially designed trailer that allows children to experience a simulated fire like situation in a home setting. The experience encompasses a range of potential fire situations and equipment to teach fire safety and prevention including a fog-making machine that produces non-toxic smoke and heated doors to impress upon children the need to feel closed doors to determine a safe route when escaping a fire. This safety house will also include a fire sprinkler room which will be used to demonstrate how effective fire sprinkler can be in residential and commercial structures.
