The Carter House, built in 1830 by Fountain Branch Carter, was in the center of one of the bloodiest battles, The Battle of Franklin, of the Civil War. The registered National Historic Landmark was used as a Federal Command Post. Heavy casualities during the Battle of Franklin totaled 2,326 Federal Troops and 6,252 Confederates, including 15 Confederate Generals and Captain Tod Carter, the youngest son of the Carter family.
