Sister Cities of Franklin, Tennessee is a nonprofit organization founded as an outgrowth of Leadership Franklin in March of 2002.
The mission of the organization is to create a network designed to encourage partnering between the City of Franklin and the international community in order to promote goodwill, sharing of culture and history, and to stimulate economic development.
Sister Cities International began in the 1950’s as part of President Eisenhower’s People to People Program. President Eisenhower’s intention was to involve individuals and organized groups at all levels of society in citizen diplomacy, with the hope that personal relationships, fostered through sister city relationships would lessen the chance of future world conflicts. Today there exist relationships between over 1300 United States cities and over 2300 cities in 137 countries worldwide.
Franklin’s first official Sister City agreement was signed with Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada on January 25, 2005 on the Sue Douglas Berry Pedestrian Bridge over the Harpeth River in Pinkerton Park. At the same time Carlton Place officials signed the agreement on the bridge crossing their Mississippi River. Several successful exchanges have taken place, including a student exchange and a Franklin staff exchange.
Sister Cities of Franklin continues to explore opportunities with other international cities to set up Sister Cities relationships.
