The Traffic Unit was established with the primary goals being the thorough investigation of traffic crashes and the reduction in the total number of crashes occurring within the City of Franklin. Members of the Traffic Unit receive advanced training in traffic crash investigations. The goal of reducing the number of crashes is achieved through a variety of methods, including selective enforcement of violations that contribute to traffic crashes, identification of high-crash areas, and developing specific solutions in these areas to increase safety for the motoring public. The Traffic Unit includes the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), responsible for the investigation of fatal crashes, and the DUI Unit, responsible for detecting and apprehending drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Traffic Unit works closely with the Governor's Highway Safety Office in developing traffic safety programs, conducting sobriety checkpoints, and utilizing grant funds to pay for personnel and equipment to help meet these goals.
