 Research & Development

The office of Research and Development has two main objectives.  The first objective deals with crime analysis.  The Franklin Police Department utilizes a crime analysis technology (CAT) program that allows the department to look at specific areas within the city and pinpoint specific crimes that are occurring.  This allows the department to focus on areas with higher crime rates by increasing officer presence.  Citizens are also able to benefit from this crime analysis because the information is available by request.  Citizens who are new to the area or want to keep up-to-date on their neighborhood activities can contact the Research and Development office and request a crime analysis.  The crimes can be generalized or specific in nature.  Those wishing a printed copy of the analysis need to make their request in writing.  The department is also looking in the near future to implement a web mapping application program that would allow anyone to access this type of information via the internet.

The other main objective of the Research and Development office is grant research and writing.  The Franklin Police Department actively seeks grants in order to offset the cost of implementing new programs and obtaining new technology.  The department currently has two Governor’s Highway Safety Grants that allow the department to focus on traffic related issues such as DUI enforcement and traffic crash investigations. Obtaining grants allows for opportunities that otherwise would be unattainable.  By advancing our technology, the department is better able to provide for the City of Franklin and its citizens.
