Bicycle Safety
Each year, dozens of people are injured while riding their bikes. To reduce injury, please follow these safety rules and discuss them with your children:

  • Always ride with a helmet.
  • It is illegal to ride on the sidewalks in downtown Franklin
  • Ride with traffic. Keep to the right side of the road.
  • Obey all traffic regulations.
  • Use proper hand signals for turning or stopping.
  • Stop and look both ways in order to make sure that sidewalks or streets are clear before entering a street.
  • Walk your bike across busy streets at corners or crosswalks.
  • Use proper headlights and a red tail light or reflector when riding at night. Avoid busy streets as much as possible and try to plan your biking before 4 PM or after 7 PM.

The Franklin Police Department recovers many stolen bikes each year. Unfortunately, only a few of those are returned to their rightful owners. Lock your bike securely when it's unattended. Use a high quality lock and case-hardened chain or cable to lock your bike. Take a moment to record the make, model, and serial number of your bicycle. If it is stolen, call the Franklin Police Department immediately to report it. You can register your bicycle online by clicking here.

Child Passenger Safety
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children in the United States, but many of these deaths can be prevented. Placing children in age and size appropriate restraint systems reduces serious and fatal injuries by more than half.

Studies show that 90% of child restraint systems are often used incorrectly. One study found that 72% of nearly 3,500 observed child restraint systems were misused in a way that could be expected to increase a child's risk of injury during a crash.

The Franklin Police Department offers a service, which will help reduce the number of children injured in motor vehicle crashes. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians are on hand to assist parents and caregivers with the proper use and installation of child restraint systems.

Child restraint systems installation and checks are by appointment only. If you would like to make an appointment or have any questions please contact The Child Passenger Safety Team by email or call 615-794-2513 ext 5810 to leave a message. Technicians are also available for schools, daycares, and events for educational programs.

Rape and Sexual Abuse Center
For 24 hour support call (615) 256-8526 or (800) 879-1999. If you are raped, get to a safe place; call 911 to report the crime; call the Rape and Sexual Abuse Center for support or help; do NOT wash, douche, or change clothes; and get medical attention immediately.

Rape is a crime. No one asks to be raped. It is not the victim's fault. When rape occurs, the victim is often left with overwhelming feelings of fear, anger, disbelief, guilt or shame. The Rape and Sexual Abuse Center is here to help you deal with these feelings. Someone from the center will accompany you to the hospital and provide assistance and support as long as necessary.
