SPEED LIMIT CHANGE ON BRIDGE STREET DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN
Beginning Monday, November 23 the speed limit on Bridge Street from 5th Avenue to First Avenue, and First Avenue North to Main Street will decrease from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour. The new speed limit signs are in place and will be unveiled early Monday morning.

WATER HOG/HERO CAMPAIGN TAKEN TO HUNTERS BEND ELEMENTARY
In Spring of this year Franklin's Water Management department launched a new water conservation campaign targeted to families and children, titled, "Don't be a water hog, be a water hero." In the last few months, Belmont's Students in Free Enterprise Program (SIFE) have created a water conservation book from the water hog/hero theme and a Belmont Honors class has developed and piloted water conservation lessons with 5th grade students of Hunters Bend Elementary School in Williamson County.

ILLUMINATION CEREMONY SET FOR SATURDAY, NOV. 28 AT CARNTON
The City of Franklin's Battlefield Task Force has announced the details of the annual Illumination Ceremony, which commemorates the nearly 10,000 casualties that resulted from the Battle of Franklin on Nov. 30, 1864. The 145th Anniversary ceremony will be held in the McGavock Confederate Cemetery at Carnton on Saturday, Nov.28, at 4:30 p.m., will include a stunning display of 10,000 luminaries, period bands representing the North and the South, hundreds of re-enactors and remarks from noted historian Thomas Flagel.

BOPAE PROGRAM KICKS OFF ON NOVEMBER 21ST
The City of Franklin and Williamson County Solid Waste Departments have teamed up to provide a new free service to Williamson County Residents. Beginning on November 21st, from 8 AM until 2 PM, residents will be able to drop-off batteries, oil, paint, anti-freeze, and electronics (BOPAE) at the City of Franklin Transfer Station located at 417 Century Court. Waste such as pesticides, herbicides, paint removers, lacquers, and swimming pool chemicals will not be collected at this location.

FRANKLIN SUSTAINABILITY COMMISSION NAMES CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR
The City of Franklin's Sustainability Commission has elected a chair and vice chair. Ken Scalf was elected chair, Adam Ballash was elected Vice Chair. The Commission, comprised of nine local volunteers, was named in August 2009, and has been meeting monthly to determine goals and priorities and also educate themselves on the City's Sustainable Community Action Plan. They have been meeting with the City's Sustainability Task Force committees and will be working closely with the City's new Sustainability/Grants Coordinator, Andrew Orr.

FRANKLIN LAUNCHES BUCK-A-BAG PROGRAM
The holidays are fast approaching and that means holiday parties, gift giving and extra trash. Instead of purchasing an additional roll-out container for $75.00, citizens can now just pay one dollar for each extra bag they leave at the curb. It's part of Franklin's Pay-as-you-throw program. Citizens can purchase pink stickers to tie the bags through the City's Utility Billing Division or the Solid Waste Offices beginning Monday, November 2.

UNKNOWN SOLDIER FUNERAL DRAWS THOUSANDS TO FRANKLIN, TN
A construction project in the area where the calamitous Battle of Franklin was fought on Nov. 30, 1864, has disturbed the resting place of an unknown soldier who was buried in a shallow grave 145 years ago during the tragic last days of the Civil War in Tennessee. The City of Franklin's Battlefield Task Force, along with local historians and government officials, led the recovery of the soldier's remains and will direct a funeral ceremony to re-inter his body at the Historic Rest Haven Cemetery in downtown Franklin, where other brave veterans - both Union and Confederate - were laid to rest.

APA DESIGNATES DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN HISTORIC DISTRICT ONE OF TOP 10 GREAT NEIGHBORHOODS
The American Planning Association (APA) announced today that the Downtown Franklin Historic District has been designated one of 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2009 by APA's Great Places in America program. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value. Franklin is the first city in Tennessee to be selected for a Great Places in America designation.
